I have always wanted to add a conservatory to my home, as it seems like the ideal place to relax and enjoy the view, or invite a few friends round for dinner and cocktails.

I've begun to notice signs of Christmas around the city streets. Decorations are going up in stores and around town, billboards for Christmas theatre productions sugest pantomime season is just around the corner. I used to enjoy a good pantomime, but with no children of suitable age in the family it is a tradition that has passed me by for a good few years.

Instead I take in a good play at Christmas and keep the tradition of winter theatregoing alive. The magic of theatre is a joy at any time of year, but there is something about going to the theatre wrapped in your finest winter woollens, having a few drinks and enjoying a show with family and friends then coming out into streets glowing with Christmas lights.

I live surrounded by beautiful Scottish scenery and well-known walker's routes. However, I'm not much for this type of outdoor activity. A surprisingly large number of friends and acquaintances enjoy hill-walking, whereas - for me - going somewhere and coming back purely for the sake of the journey seems rather pointless.

With that said, I do enjoy the time spent with friends who do enjoy taking to the hills, just as long as I'm kitted out in the right country clothing. The proper country attire can make the difference between a highly enjoyable days walking or an uncomfortable trek in the wind or rain, or even sunshine.

I think that may be the reason that I never particularly enjoyed the hill walking experience - without proper country clothes, I was forever catching colds.

A leisure break is usually on the card about this time of year. The clocks change and all of a sudden winter is here, the dark nights too mean that feeling blue is very much a daily occurrence.

But, not to worry, if you take a break to beat back the blues and refresh the batteries ahead of Christmas. However, the trick this year has been not to spend unnecessary cash while we're in the grip of recession. So, I'll be taking my holiday in London and do a bit of theatregoing instead of more far flung (warmer) destinations.

Had to fly from Birmingham recently when heading off to a week’s holiday to visit a friend overseas, and as it was a while since I’d been there, I thought I’d better check up on the Birmingham airport car parks situation before I got to the airport. Am so glad I did, as while searching online, I came across a company that made the whole experience so much less stressful. Not only did they look after the car while I was away, in a supervised carpark – 24/7 (like this sort of thing), they also had it waiting for me at the terminal when I got back to Birmingham (see more about the city) tired and hungry. When I took part in a paintball day recently, I was surprised by the sheer variety of paintball games.

I knew about the usual elimination type games, but not about Traditor or Atomic Bomb.

While they all use the same basic equipment, these games are all very different. Traditor (which comes from the Latin for traitor) means you have to tag your own team leader, before anyone suspects you have an ulterior motive.

In Atomic Bomb style games, you have to find the bomb and plant it in your enemies base. But they are trying to do the same.

The range of games means there is something for everyone, from tactical games to ones that simply involve trying to shoot everyone.

Just bought myself a new laptop battery adapter so I can finally get my old laptop up and running again. I seem to be doing a lot of travelling lately, so I thought it would be a good idea to resurrect the old thing so I can entertain myself with it.

Obviously it's not exactly a high-spec power machine, so I'm kind of limited in the games I can play on it. I don't really want to spend hours and hours playing Solitare and Minsweeper, so I've been looking for games that don't need lots of resources to run. The best ones I've found so far are Rollercoaster Tycoon, Rome Total War, Civilization 3 and Red Alert 2.

While I was searching for a new laptop battery adapter, I found this story about the One Laptop Per Child project. It's pretty interesting stuff, but I wonder what games will be available for it...

My girlfriend is heading to an adventure hen weekend in Perth in the coming months.

I fear it won't be her thing. She's used to the being pampered, spending big money on haircuts, tans etc - not tearing around a field while hanging on to the handlebars of a quad bike.

However, it does sound a good deal more exciting than the usual girly nonsense of sitting in a spa having your finger nails painted while fawning over a friend's new haircut.

And of course, that vital part of any hen or stag night is still available with Perth's pubs and clubs the likely destination for a night out. Plenty of companies (like this lot here) can arrange hen nights and provide VIP areas to the top clubs.

During filming for the latest series of the long-running Sunday night TV show, a particularly enthusiastic man proudly presented what he thought was a priceless antique bottle, which he'd managed to acquire at the bargain price of £1,000.
